MEMORIES (AND THE people who assisted type THEM)

Spurred by the composing of my new book about my decade on the road, I discover myself wandering the halls of memory reminiscing about my years on the travel.

I dig with old pictures as well as journal entries. I browse Facebook for people whose lives briefly intersected with my own on the highway of life. stories as well as faces long forgotten zoom to the forefront my mind as I question where they are as well as what they’re doing.

As strangers in a far-off land, we were each other’s support. We were the very best of friends, partners in crime, as well as in some cases lovers.

Yet, as all of us roam even more along life’s path as well as cast our head backwards, we notice each other’s light fading like a star being snuffed out, up until one day, it’s gone as well as nothing however dust remains.

What occurred to the people I hitchhiked with in Iceland?

Where are all these people now?

Where are the Spaniards from Valencia who I partied with in Florence?

What occurred to Lennart, the man I played poker with in Amsterdam?

Does Jen, a German woman as well as my very first connection on the road, still online in Australia?

Where is that American couple from Bocas del Toro whose info I failed to remember to compose down?

Where are those people I satisfied in Thailand that influenced me to stop my job?

Those people I dealt with at that hostel in Taiwan with?

I satisfied these people in Thailand as well as went to them in Bordeaux. I keep in mind this ideal day – a journey to beach, sunset on this sand dune, as well as a red wine as well as cheese dinner. however where are they now? I understand not.

Where are the numerous others I spent days, hours, as well as minutes with in hostels around the world? The ones who wandered unfamiliar streets, partied into the night, broke bread as well as laughed with me?

But that doesn’t make me question about them any type of less.

Our paths may not intersect once again as well as the memory of them may fade (really, what was the name of that couple from Bocas?), however their impact on my life will stay with me forever. They taught me to let go, laugh, love, be much more adventurous, push myself, as well as so much more.

My life is much better since they were in it.

One day, far from now, I’ll look back once again as well as much more lights will have faded. I’ll once again question where they went. And, like a time traveler, I’ll zoom back to the moments we had, relive them in my mind, as well as envision a pleased future for my good friend where all his or her dreams came as true as mine.

Maybe they as well are staring out at the sky as well as believing the same.

Maybe they’re telling their friend/loved one/kid, “There was this time….”, remembering me, as well as stating “That was a great guy. I hope life is treating him well.”

As we travel the road of life, perhaps that’s as much as one can truly hope for.
